TOPIC 1. WHY IS ACADEMIC WRITING IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION?

T1.1 Brainstorming

Welcome to the Academic Writing Course

This course is an opportunity for you to strengthen your academic writing skills, which are essential for your journey as future educators and researchers. Writing a scientific article is not merely an academic requirement, but also a way to train critical thinking, organize ideas logically, and communicate knowledge to the wider scholarly community.

In our first meeting, we will begin by reflecting on your experiences in reading and writing scientific papers. Why is this important? Because your prior experiences will serve as a foundation to better understand the challenges, needs, and expectations in learning how to write academic articles. Just as we learn to listen before we speak, engaging with journal articles through reading is a crucial first step before producing effective academic writing.

Academic writing is often considered challenging: the use of formal language, strict citation rules, and adherence to the IMRAD structure (Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion). However, it is precisely through these challenges that we can develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective ways of presenting our research and ideas.

Throughout this course, you will be guided step by step: from asking questions (Questioning), gathering information, analyzing, drafting, revising, and finally preparing your article for submission and publication. In this first session, we will focus on the Questioning stage: reflecting on your journal reading experiences, identifying the most challenging aspects, and raising critical questions about how scientific articles are structured and written.

          Motivation For Junior High School
, i read that articles last week, and i access the articles from google schoolar. From that article i got the information about my interest in the TPR method. I feel so enjoyed while i’m reading the text, because the author writing concisely and clearly, and the method used is qualitative so it gives me an inspiration for my article.
          2. In my opinion, the article has a clear structure but seems a little less formal and there are several typos that make the reader have to focus more to read it. Why is it memorable because this article is the shortest article I have ever read.

            2. The first time I read it, I found it very difficult ’cause I wasn’t used to read such paper. But after keep reading it, i found myself drawn into the topic.

Last week, I read an article titled “The Effect of Using Quizizz to EFL Students’ Engagement and Learning Outcome” from Google Scholar. I chose it because it clearly explains how Quizizz influences students’ engagement and learning outcomes in EFL classrooms. The challenging aspect of this study is that Quizizz improved students’ learning outcomes—psychomotor, cognitive, and affective, but did not significantly enhance their engagement. This means teachers still face difficulties in keeping students motivated and actively involved when using game-based learning platforms like Quizizz.

                      1. My experience reading the article “Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK): Exploring Saudi EFL Teachers’ Views to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Learning” was interesting. It discusses how English teachers in Saudi Arabia apply the TPACK model to improve students’ vocabulary. I read it last night after downloading it from Google Scholar. I found the topic relevant to English education and helpful in showing how technology supports teaching and learning. However, the article was quite long and used many academic terms like mixed-methods and reliability, which made it a bit challenging to understand.
                      2. This reading experience was memorable because it helped me realize the importance of integrating technology in learning, especially to improve vocabulary. The main challenge was the academic language and the dense structure of the article.

                        1. One of my most memorable experiences in reading a journal article was when I read “The Effect of the Four-Square Writing Method on 7th-Grade Students’ Informative Text Writing Skills.” I read it last month while preparing my research proposal about writing evaluation. I accessed it through DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) using my laptop. At first, I felt curious and motivated because the topic was closely related to my study, but I also felt a bit overwhelmed by the academic terms and statistical explanations.

                        2. This experience was memorable because it helped me understand how researchers use pre-test and post-test designs to measure students’ writing improvement. However, it was also challenging because of the complex structure and formal academic language. The methodology and data analysis sections were especially hard to follow at first, but rereading them helped me learn a lot about how real research works.

I once read a journal article titled “The Influence of Digital Literacy and Learning Motivation on Learning Outcomes of Generation Z.” I found it on Google Scholar while working on a class project last semester. The topic caught my attention because it was very relevant to students today. While reading, I felt both interested and challenged since the language was quite formal and full of data. It became memorable because it helped me understand how digital literacy and motivation affect our learning results.
                              2. What made it memorable was how the article clearly connected digital literacy and motivation to students’ performance, which felt very relatable. The most challenging part was understanding the academic language and data interpretation since it used many formal and technical terms.

                                1. One of my most memorable experiences in reading a journal article was when I read about the use of Augmented Reality in Teaching Writing of Descriptive Text in English language learning. I read it around May last year through Google Scholar. At first, I felt quite challenged because the language was very academic and there were many unfamiliar technical terms.

                                2. What made this experience memorable was the article’s clear structure—from the background and methodology to the findings. Yet, the discussion part was quite difficult because it contained deep analyses and many theoretical references. From this experience, I realized that the common challenges students face when reading journal articles are the complex academic language, the need for broad theoretical understanding, and maintaining focus while reading long texts.

                                                              1. From my point of view, writing scientific articles is crucial for English language learners because it forms the foundation of their academic and professional development. This process trains students in critical thinking and research from problem formulation and literature review to data analysis essential skills for further study and careers.

                                                              2. I usually use Google Scholar to search for and read journal articles. I found two journals with the same theme: “APPLYING DIGITAL STORYTELLING TO IMPROVE INDONESIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ VISUAL MEMORY AND WRITING SKILLS” and “The use of digital storytelling to improve students’ writing skills.” Both articles use the IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) structure, which is the standard format for scientific research articles. The difference between the two articles lies in the research subject.

                                                              3. The most difficult sections of journal articles for me to understand are usually the Methodology and Discussion. This difficulty arises because these two sections often present information in great detail and use dense technical language.

                                                              4. Reading journal articles helped improve my academic writing skills because journals served as role models. I learned firsthand how experts logically structure arguments (IMRaD), from introduction to conclusion. Furthermore, I was exposed to a formal and precise style of writing, which taught me how to use technical terminology correctly and master proper citation and referencing skills, which are the gold standard in scientific writing.

                                                                1. It moves students from being consumers of knowledge to producers of knowledge. They learn the conventions, structure, and formal tone of academic discourse, which is a powerful form of communication in its own right. The process forces them to formulate a clear research question, find and synthesize existing literature, and construct a logical, evidence-based argument. In my research process, I primarily rely on Google Scholar

                                                                2. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AyKZOHNiuD-BSGlHG8eanZke-s_YcXZj/view?usp=drive_link

It is filled with field-specific and statistical terminology , The descriptions of experimental designs, data collection instruments, and statistical analyses require a certain level of technical knowledge to evaluate the validity and reliability of the study.
                                                                4. I see how other researchers integrate sources, paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting to support their claims and engage in a scholarly conversation. This teach me how to use evidence effectively.

                                                                                  1. I think writing a scientific article is important because it helps us learn how to think critically, organize ideas, and use proper academic language. It also trains us to do research properly, which is really useful if we want to be teachers or continue studying later. Plus, it makes us more confident in writing formal English.
                                                                                  2. I usually use Google Scholar, because it’s the easiest to access and has lots of free articles. Sometimes I also check ResearchGate if I can’t find the full version on Google Scholar.
                                                                                  3. I found two articles about using songs to teach listening skills. Both of them have the same basic structure—abstract, introduction, literature review, method, results, discussion, and conclusion. But one article was more formal and used lots of data and statistics, while the other one explained things more simply and focused more on classroom examples. The writing style also felt different—one was more academic, the other more practical.
                                                                                  4. For me, the methodology part is the hardest to understand because it’s full of technical terms, research design details, and sometimes statistical analysis that I’m not very familiar with. Sometimes the sentences are also really long, which makes it harder to follow.
                                                                                  5. Reading journal articles helps a lot because I can see how academic writers structure their ideas, use formal language, and cite sources correctly. It also gives me inspiration for vocabulary and sentence patterns. The more I read, the more I understand how to write in a clear, logical, and academic way.

                                                                                • #3182

Writing academic articles is very important for English Education students because it forces us to interact with precision and formality in academic writing. This encourages us to consume information and begin contributing new knowledge or providing critical analysis in our field. The journal finder I usually use is Google Scholar because it provides me with comprehensive articles. Sometimes I also search on Elsevier to find articles.
                                                                                    2. I have read two articles on reading comprehension for EFL students. The first article focuses on improving reading comprehension, while the second focuses on analysing problems in EFL students’ reading comprehension. Both articles examine students’ reading abilities but use different research methods.
                                                                                    3. I’d say that the Methodology section is often the most difficult part to fully understand, as there is data that needs to be read, especially in quantitative or mixed studies.
                                                                                    4. Reading journal articles is the best way to improve our academic writing skills because they provide authentic, high-quality examples of effective scientific communication.

This section can be confusing since it often includes technical terms and detailed procedures that require a good understanding of research methods.

                                                                                      4. In my opinion, reading journal articles help me improve my academic writing because I can learn how to organize ideas, use formal language, and follow academic structures like IMRaD.

                                                                                        1. Its important to every students, not only English Education students because by writing scientific article, it means we are able to create new innovative research in real life time. By the fact that everyday goes by, students always change. The innovative strategies of teaching should developed each day and time, to make sure the process of teaching and learning are effective. By writing a scientific article, it proves that students able to contribute in the field, share original finding especially on a new teaching techniques effectiveness, and able to responsible to their writing. Its also able to develop critical thinking, research skills, and analysis skill on students.
Journal finder I usually use is Google Schoolar. Some of journal finder I also use is Project, and Sinta
                                                                                        2. I found five articles which were interesting for me, it has differences and similarities in some of their aspects. I put all those articles summary in google drive with word format. 3. To me its methodology. Because some of article didn’t showed a specific information about it. Such as instruments in the research. They wrote they use interview for the instrument, but I didn’t know what kind of question they use, how to assess the interview sheets, etc. Suddenly, all I know is the research is showed positive results. All of journal parts have their own difficulties to me, like in the introduction. I find it quiet hard to write, looking for a references, till paraphrase. But overall Methodology is rather difficult to understand
                                                                                        4. writing is productive skill (output) so speaking does. To produce some output, we must receive some input which also called as receptive.
Reading, and listening are receptive skills. To be concluded, if we want to create some writing we must receive some input by reading. If we want to be able to speak, we must receive input by listening. By reading journal articles we will write better because we will find some vocabularies that are common used, we find strategies that suit the best, we will find the best approach and kind of method to used, also we will find new insight, opinion and fact from experts so the writing will more accurate. By reading, we will able to analyze multiple sources to build new arguments, statement, rather than just writing summaries.

Writing scientific articles is important for English education students because it helps us learn to write academically, think critically, and develop ideas with a strong theoretical basis. In addition, writing articles also trains research skills and the use of formal English.
I used Google Scholar to search for journals because it is easy to use and provides many reliable scientific articles.

                                                                                          2. I found two articles, both articles focus on English teaching, but from different perspectives. The first article discusses students’ perceptions of writing instruction, while the second article examines the influence of technology (Augmented Reality) in English learning. In terms of structure, both articles have the same sections, such as abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion, but the writing styles are different—the first article is more descriptive and reflective, while the second article is more technical and innovative.

                                                                                          3. The methodology section was the most difficult for me to understand because it contained many research terms and technical explanations about research design, instruments, and data analysis, which were sometimes confusing.

                                                                                          4. Reading journal articles helped me improve my academic writing skills because I was able to learn how to construct formal sentences, write with a neat structure, and understand how other writers develop arguments based on data and theory.

                                                                                              1. Writing a scientific article is important for English education students because it trains us to think critically, organize ideas systematically, and use academic English properly. Through journal writing, we also learn how to support our arguments with valid data and credible sources, which is very useful for future research or thesis writing. To find the journals, I used ‘Google Scholar and ResearchGate’, which provide many open-access articles related to English education.

                                                                                              2. I analyzed two journal articles on the same topic: one quantitative and one qualitative study about students’ motivation in learning English. The quantitative article used the IMRAD structure (Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion) with clear statistical data and charts. The qualitative article, on the other hand, had a more narrative structure and focused on descriptions, interviews, and thematic analysis. Both had similar sections like the abstract and references, but they differed in terms of data presentation and writing style—the quantitative one was more objective and concise, while the qualitative one was more descriptive and interpretive.

                                                                                              3. The part I find most difficult to understand is the methodology section, especially in quantitative studies. It often includes complex statistical terms, formulas, and data analysis techniques that require more background knowledge. Sometimes, the explanation of sampling or instrument validation is also quite technical.

                                                                                              4. Reading journal articles helps me improve my academic writing because I can learn the correct structure, academic vocabulary, and citation style. It also helps me see how professional researchers build arguments logically and cohesively. By analyzing how they write introductions, present findings, and discuss implications, I can apply similar techniques to improve my own research papers and assignments.

Writing a scientific article is important for English education students because it trains us to think critically, organize ideas logically, and express arguments using academic language. It also helps us engage with current research trends in language teaching and learning. 2. I used the Elsevier Journal Finder to look for journals related to English language education and teaching methodologies. It was useful because I could input the title and abstract of my topic, and the tool suggested journals that matched the scope and keywords of my research.
                                                                                                3. Find two or more journal articles on the same topic. Compare and find what similarities or differences did you notice in their structure or style.

Through the process of writing, we learn how to organize ideas logically, use evidence to support our arguments, and communicate professionally in English. It also allows us to contribute to the development of English teaching and learning by sharing our findings and experiences with other educators.

                                                                                                  3. The most difficult part for me to understand is usually the Methodology section, especially when the researchers explain statistical analysis or complex research designs. Sometimes, the authors use technical terms like t-count, significance value, correlation coefficient, or Likert scale, which can be confusing if we are not familiar with research terminology.
However, in qualitative studies like Wirentake (2025), the methodology is easier to follow because it focuses on interviews and observations rather than statistical analysis.

                                                                                                  4. In my opinion, reading journal articles greatly helps me enhance my academic writing skills. Through reading, I can observe how professional researchers organize their ideas, build logical arguments, and maintain coherence in their writing. It also exposes me to a variety of academic expressions and vocabulary that I can apply in my own writing. Moreover, by analyzing how authors present data and discuss findings, I learn how to write more critically and objectively. Overall, reading journal articles helps me understand what good academic writing looks like and motivates me to improve my own work.

Sometimes, the writers use complicated statistics or unfamiliar ways of analyzing data that need more knowledge about research methods.

I think scientific articles are really important for English education students because they contain a lot of useful knowledge. From these articles, we can learn about many research findings related to the English learning environment that are valid and trustworthy. Reading scientific articles also helps us think more critically and see things from different perspectives, since they provide reliable and interesting information. That’s why I believe reading scientific articles is essential for English education students. Personally, I often use Google Scholar to find articles because it’s easy to access and full of credible sources.

In my perspective, the most difficult parts of a journal article are the methodology and discussion sections. These parts need deeper understanding and sometimes special guidance, because they deal with data analysis and how to explain the results clearly. It’s not something we can just guess or do carelessly, we really need to know what we’re doing. That’s why I think students should get more support or mentoring to fully understand these sections.
                                                                                                        4. I believe reading journal articles can really help us improve our academic writing skills. By reading different kinds of academic works, we can learn how to organize ideas better, use the right academic words, and follow the correct structure of a research paper. It also helps us become more open-minded and critical when reading or writing something. The more we read journal articles, the more we understand how to write our own papers with confidence and better quality.

                                                                                                              3. I read a journal about using Duolingo to improve students’ grammar skills, then I compared it with another journal that discussed a similar topic. The structure of both was the same, with an introduction, methods, results, and discussion (IMRaD). But one of them had more complete explanations, especially in the statistics section.
                                                                                                              4. The part that confused me the most was the methodology, because there were many technical terms and explanations about research design that were sometimes difficult to understand if you were not familiar with the terms.
                                                                                                              5. By reading journals, I learned how to write well and correctly, from how to organize ideas, use more formal language, to understanding the correct structure of academic writing. So, it can be useful for writing assignments or theses later on.

This is because knowledge about language learning and the use of technology in English language learning is currently growing. This is certainly influenced by social conditions, increasingly sophisticated developments and supported by easy access to technology and the large number of people who are aware of the importance of learning and using English to support their careers, whether in education or other fields of work. It is hoped that the research conducted by English education students can produce concrete data that is presented in a scientific article about knowledge or English learning activities in order to improve the effectiveness of learning in the classroom. Additionally, it is hoped that writing a scientific article about English language learning can open new perspectives and ways of thinking for readers, showing them that English language learning is important to study and that language will always undergo development influenced by social conditions and the times.

This section often includes many technical terms, research designs, and data analysis methods that require deeper knowledge to interpret. Sometimes, the explanation of instruments or statistical procedures is too detailed or complex, making it hard to follow the process and results clearly.

I usually find the methodology section the most difficult part of a journal article to understand. This section often includes many technical terms, research designs, and data analysis methods that require deeper knowledge to interpret. Sometimes, the explanation of instruments or statistical procedures is too detailed or complex, making it hard to follow the process and results clearly.
                                                                                                                          4. In my opinion, reading journal articles really helps me improve my academic writing skills. By reading them, I can learn how to organize ideas clearly, use formal and academic language, and support arguments with evidence. It also helps me understand how to write more critically and logically, just like professional researchers. The more I read journal articles, the more I get used to the academic writing style, which helps me become a better writer myself.

The Methodology section is often the most challenging for me, particularly in quantitative studies. It is filled with field-specific and statistical terminology , The descriptions of experimental designs, data collection instruments, and statistical analyses require a certain level of technical knowledge to evaluate the validity and reliability of the study.

I think writing a scientific article is really important for English education students because it helps us practice how to think critically and write in an academic way. Through writing an article, we learn how to organize ideas, support them with theories or previous studies, and use proper academic language. Besides that, it also trains us to be more disciplined in doing research and to understand how real academic writing works — which will be useful later when we write our thesis or become teachers and researchers.

                                                                                                                                      1. I think it’s important because it helps us learn how to write formally, think critically, and understand how to support our ideas with evidence. As future teachers, we also need to know how to explain ideas clearly and professionally.
                                                                                                                                      2. I used Google Scholar because it’s easy to use and I can find many journal articles there.
                                                                                                                                      3. I read two articles about using apps for learning vocabulary—one about Quizlet, and the other about Kahoot. Both had similar structure: abstract, intro, method, results, and conclusion. But the language was a bit different. The Quizlet article was harder to understand, while the Kahoot one was easier and had more pictures and graphs.
                                                                                                                                      4. The methodology part is the hardest for me because it has a lot of research terms and numbers that I don’t fully understand yet.
                                                                                                                                      5. It helps me learn how to write in a formal way, how to organize my ideas, and how to use sources correctly. I also learn new vocabulary and how to write more clearly.

However, these questions are not quite strong or relevant enough for the upcoming interview with journal editors or reviewers.
                                                                                                                                        • The question about time management is more related to personal writing habits, not to the publication process.
                                                                                                                                        • The question about rejection or harsh feedback is quite common and does not lead to new or specific insights.
                                                                                                                                        • The question about important parts of a research article is too general and already well known.

However, it is placed in the wrong category.
                                                                                                                                        • This question should be moved to Category 3 – Challenges, because it focuses on the difficulties or problems writers often face when organizing their articles, rather than on the structure itself.

Writing a scientific article is important because it helps English education students think critically, organize ideas, and write academically. It also prepares us for future research or teaching careers. I usually use Google Scholar and sometimes ResearchGate to find journal articles.

For me, the most difficult part is the methodology section. It often includes research designs, data analysis, and statistical terms that are hard to follow. Sometimes I need to reread that part several times to really understand what the researchers did and why they chose certain methods.

I can learn how authors develop their ideas, connect paragraphs, and support their statements with evidence. It also helps me improve my vocabulary and get used to formal expressions. The more I read, the more I understand how good academic writing should look.

Scientific article writing is a process that involves many stages, from developing an idea to submitting a manuscript for publication. Each stage requires specific knowledge, skills, and awareness of the expectations set by journals and reviewers. For many students, understanding these stages can be difficult without real-life insights from experienced scholars or journal editors. Therefore, discussing and preparing questions as a group will help students clarify their understanding and focus on what they really want to know about the publication process.

Through group discussion, students have the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences with academic writing and connect them with the challenges of publishing in journals. By working collaboratively, they can generate meaningful questions that not only reflect their curiosity but also guide them toward a deeper understanding of what makes an article publishable. This process also encourages students to think critically, compare perspectives, and learn how to formulate academic inquiries.

The questions developed in this session will serve as the foundation for the upcoming interview with journal editors, reviewers, or lecturers with strong publication experience. This means that the quality of the questions created here will directly influence the depth of insights students can gain in the next stage. Therefore, it is important for each group to take the discussion seriously, explore different angles, and prepare clear and focused questions. This way, the interview will become a valuable learning experience about the realities of scientific publishing.

Thank you for your questions. However, both of your questions are still too general. Please revise them to be more specific and practical from the editor’s or reviewer’s point of view.

For example, instead of asking how clear writing helps an article get accepted, you can ask what clear writing actually means for editors or what specific elements they look for in well-organized writing.
Likewise, instead of asking about access to online journals, you could focus on something more concrete, such as how many references are considered sufficient or what types of sources are most valued in journal articles.

Please revise your questions to reflect these ideas.

However, these questions are not quite strong or relevant enough for the upcoming interview with journal editors or reviewers.

Please create new questions that are more meaningful and focused on the editors’ or reviewers’ professional perspectives — for example, what specific criteria they use when deciding whether to accept or reject an article, or what common weaknesses they often find in submissions.

                                                                                                                                                        • The question “What are the most common mistakes students make in organizing their article structure?” is a good and relevant question. However, it is placed in the wrong category.
                                                                                                                                                        • This question should be moved to Category 3 – Challenges, because it focuses on the difficulties or problems writers often face when organizing their articles, rather than on the structure itself.

Please create new questions that are more meaningful and focused on the editors’ or reviewers’ professional perspectives — for example, what specific criteria they use when deciding whether to accept or reject an article, or what common weaknesses they often find in submissions.

We have learned that it follows the IMRaD format and must include reliable references while avoiding plagiarism. Although we have not published a journal article yet, we understand that the process requires clear ideas, formal language, and careful review before acceptance. From our class experiences, we know an article usually includes a title, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and references. Through this discussion, we hope to learn more about how to write and publish a good-quality research article, so we prepared several questions to guide us in the process.

Overall, your questions are well written and show good understanding of each category. However, most of them are still too general and do not invite in-depth discussion based on real experiences.

Please revise all the questions in Categories 1–4 and the first question in Category 5 to make them more specific, critical, and experience-based. You may ask questions that explore how or what exactly successful writers or lecturers do in real publication contexts.

After completing the group discussion and compiling a list of questions, the next step is to refine and improve these questions so that they are ready to be used in a real interview setting. Since not all questions may be clear, focused, or relevant to the goals of scientific article writing and publication. Therefore, it is important to review, discuss, and polish the questions collaboratively before moving forward.

In this stage, each group representative presents their list of questions to the class. Together with the lecturer, the class engages in an open discussion to examine the wording, clarity, and focus of each question. Suggestions for improvement are recorded directly in the worksheet table. After the refinement process, the final version of each question is marked with a ✔️ to indicate that it is ready for use in the upcoming Interview stage with editors or reviewers. This activity ensures that all questions are clear, practical, and aligned with real academic writing and publishing challenges, making them effective tools for further exploration.
